• Sgt. Nathan Hale's cousin by blood but they were raised as brother and sister by Susan's father.
• In 1945 Susan won the shoot off sponsored by the Young Ranchers of South Dakota, which Hale himself won in 1942. However, the award was later rescinded for "consorting with the Alliance for American Autonomy in SRPA file YRSD519594.
